Former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has passed away
As of February 21, 2025, Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati, the former chairman of Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has passed away in Nairobi. He was 63 years old. Chebukati, who served as IEBC chairman from January 2017 to January 2023, oversaw the 2017 and 2022 general elections. In early 2024, reports indicated that he had been hospitalized due to an undisclosed illness. Despite rumors and misinformation about his health, his condition remained private until his passing. Chebukati's tenure at the IEBC was marked by significant challenges, including overseeing contentious elections and implementing electoral reforms. He is survived by his wife, Mary Chebukati Wanyonyi, and their children.
